Arkansas has the second-highest sexual assault rate in the United States with 77.2 rapes per 100,000 people. According to studies, women, and men, that report having experienced rape met criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Trauma can have adverse physical ramifications such as pelvic pain, intense premenstrual syndrome, arthritis, or gastrointestinal stress. Survivors’ sexual health can suffer after a sexual assault for apparent reasons. Thus, requiring mental health treatment. Obtaining mental health care early in the process can treat PTSD and prevent additional symptoms associated with such trauma. Mental health care includes medications, supportive groups, and psychotherapy.
Working with a trained mental health professional often improves survivors’ physical health. Often people who experience sexual assault try to numb the mental distress by using alcohol or drugs. Mental health care can help one avoid the consequences and risks of substance abuse. Lastly, survivors sometimes feel powerless after an assault, which can be a constant threat to one’s livelihood. A mental health professional trained in sexual assault can understand the impact on individuals and offer personalized guidance towards a happy and healthy life, as well as help reclaim the power that was taken from them.
The Haven Rape Crisis Center advocates for those harmed by sexual violence by centering survivors, promoting societal change, and committing to be an evolving force for social equity of race, sex, or class. In advocacy, part of our role is to provide confidential emotional support, explain medical and legal options and to discuss the effects of trauma and provide adaptive coping strategies for the days ahead. In addition, Haven Rape Crisis Center helps survivors to coordinate follow up services that are crucial to the healing process, the ability to move forward, and establish their new normal.
